Soil Nailing
Many project managers or other decision makers become interested in soil nailing as an economical alternative to cut retaining walls, gravity walls, precast paneling or other slope stabilization or retaining wall construction.
What is Soil Nailing?
The basic concept behind soil nailing will be entirely familiar to anyone who has constructed a simple anchored retaining wall in their yard or garden. Soil nailing is an economical and attractive alternative to competing methods for slope stabilization or retaining wall construction. Using specialized heavy equipment, the operator drills into the soil’s slope, fills the hole with grout, and inserts steel rods or tendons into the hole. The face of the soil’s slope is then covered with shotcrete or other facing and the facings are held in place supported by the “dead-man” steel and grout anchors.
Advantages to Soil Nailing
Retention walls created with the soil nailing method can:
- Follow irregular curves
- Be used in tighter spaces
- Limit obstructions to traffic of any kind
- Facilitate future modifications
- Be more noise friendly
- Reduce the negative impacts to adjacent properties
- Use less space for shoring/anchoring
- Cut the need for more soil excavation
